DROID Delivers in November

Verizon is reportedly spending $100 million to make the case that the DROID DOES where other smartphones don’t. Verizon and the Motorola DROID may not have unseated King iPhone yet, but the DROID did deliver very solid numbers in the first few weeks after the launch.

Through its popular analytics service, Localytics monitors usage of top mobile applications on Android, BlackBerry and iPhone handsets in the US and around the world. To estimate the success of the DROID launch, Localytics used dynamic segmentation analysis to focus only on Android application usage in the US. The day before the launch, on November 5, Localytics predicted based on its analysis of earlier Android handset releases that the DROID would quickly represent a significant share of Android users—and expectations were clearly met!

Within the first week of its launch on November 6, the DROID already represented over 40% of unique Android mobile application users in the US. Through the end of November, the DROID’s share grew to over 45%. On the mobile web, Clicky reported similar traffic numbers for the DROID in the US.

Worldwide, the share of mobile application usage by Android 2.0 users, largely driven by the DROID, grew almost as quickly and may exceed Android 2.0's share of mobile web usage. Localytics recorded that devices running Android 2.0 (Éclair) represented 35% of worldwide mobile application unique users by the end of November. Web browsing statistics released by Admob put the DROID at a smaller 24% of worldwide Android traffic.

The combination of Motorola, Android, Verizon and the DROID DOES campaign is off to a fantastic start! Although the iPhone continues to dominate, more Android handsets are on the way as mobile users everywhere continue the transition to smarter and more useful mobile phones.
