Engagement Analytics

There are four different Engagement reports available:

Retention Analysis

The Retention Analysis report shows the return rate for users who started using the app at a given time.

Retention Analysis

Suggested Uses
This report can help developers gauge how quickly users run through content or to note how changes in updated versions of the app uptake. Because this report looks at the retention of users based on when they started using the app this is also a great way to measure the success of specific marketing or promotional efforts. This report can be used to tell if users acquired during one campaign came back to the app more than users acquired during another campaign the next week.

Session Length

This reports illustrates the distribution of session lengths.

Suggested Uses
Session length is the time between when a user launches the app and when they close it. If a user returns within fifteen seconds the session is continued. This chart should be used in conjunction with the session interval chart to paint a picture of user engagement.

Common questions
“My app never should be open more than 15 minutes. How come there are so many sessions that go longer?”-Results may be skewed by users leaving apps running when they put the device down or by improper integration on multitasking platforms.

Session Interval

This report  illustrates the frequency that users launch the app. Every time a session is recorded, Localytics records how much time had passed since that user’s previous session. This chart displays data for every session received in the time period. If a user uses the app three times in one week they will contribute three datapoints.

Suggested Uses
The frequency with which users launch your app can indicate their engagement. Some applications lend themselves better to more frequent use so it is important for developers to understand whether or not the application is being used the way it was intended.

Notes and Common questions
In this report it is possible for a user to be “double counted” and fall into two categories, or fall into the same category multiple times. For example: if a user launches your app five times in the same twenty minutes, he will added into the “Same hour” category each time.

Loyalty

Every time Localytics receives a session from a user for an app it records the number of previous sessions for that user and displays it in this chart.

Suggested Uses
This chart shows how many times users have launched an app. This is an indicator of whether or not users are using an application few times or if they are remaining loyal and engaged. A high proportion of more engaged, loyal users will lead to a higher count of sessions with many previous session launches. Similarly, an extreme drop off at early numbers might show that your user-base is just growing, or not keeping users attracted.

Notes and Common Questions
Similarly to Session Interval the same user will and appear in multiple columns of the graph. For example, if a user downloads your app and launches it 10 during the period reported, he will appear in each of the 1-8 segments and twice in 9-14. However, if a previously engaged user returns to the app after some time, he may only appear in one of the larger segments.
